Why consider donor eggs?

There are many reasons why donor eggs may be the right option for your family-building journey. Everyone’s path to parenthood is unique, and Rainbow Fertility is here to support you every step of the way.

Using donor eggs may be an option for:

  • Those who wish to conceive but do not have access to eggs
  • Single parents by choice who want to grow their family independently
  • People facing fertility challenges, including those with low ovarian reserve, poor egg quality, or medical conditions that influence egg health

What is the process of using donor eggs?

Step 1: Download Eeve Donor Bank

Download the Eeve Donor Bank app or visit Eeve Donor Bank’s website to browse Australia’s largest selection of clinic-recruited donor eggs. You can search our donors and shortlist potential matches today.

Download the app now on the App Store or Google Play Store.

Step 2: Appointment with a Rainbow Fertility fertility specialist

After exploring potential donors, it’s time to book an appointment with one of our fertility specialists. At your initial appointment, we’ll discuss the donor egg process and your medical history to create your personal treatment plan. Your specialist may request routine fertility blood tests and will discuss your genetic testing.

Rainbow Fertility strongly recommends that all patients accessing donor eggs complete expanded carrier screening.

Step 3: Register

Once you have a treatment plan, our Patient Services Team will send you a patient registration form to complete and return.

Step 4: Get your cost quote and e-learning

You will now receive a detailed donor egg cost quote and our e-booklet to guide you through the donor egg process so you are fully informed and confident in the process.

Step 5: Reserve your donor

You can reserve one allocation of six eggs (local or overseas). The final step to reserve the donor will take place once the pre-requisite steps have been completed (treatment plan, screenings, extended carrier screening, counselling, consents, egg selection form, and fee estimate signed).

If you have completed genetic testing, you can only reserve a donor once the results have been returned. Results can take up to six weeks.

Step 6: Counselling

Australian law requires all donor egg recipients to complete two counselling sessions with an ANZICA-accredited counsellor. These specialist counsellors are trained in infertility and understand the emotional, ethical and legal complexities of donor conception.

Step 7: Begin Treatment

Once all the steps are completed and your documents returned, you’re now ready to commence your treatment.

*The order of these steps/requirements may vary depending on your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about using donor eggs

What are donor eggs?

Donor eggs are provided by individuals who altruistically donate to help individuals and couples achieve their dreams of parenthood. This is carried out under strict regulations to ensure the highest standards of safety, ethics, and transparency.

What are the types of donor egg?

  • Known donor: A known donor is someone you have a personal connection with who has agreed to voluntarily donate their egg. This could include a friend, relative, or trusted individual.
  • Clinic-recruited donor: Eggs donated altruistically to an unknown recipient. These donors undergo comprehensive medical screenings and professional counselling to ensure the highest standards of safety, including testing for transmittable and genetic conditions

What treatment options are available for people using donor eggs?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilisation involves the fertilisation of the egg by sperm in an incubator outside the body before the embryo is transferred back into the recipient’s uterus.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a specialised form of IVF that involves the injection of a single sperm directly into a mature egg. ICSI is also used for the treatment of severe cases of male infertility.

What are some things to consider when using donor egg ?

Who can become an egg donor?

Local donors recruited through Egg Donors Australia can donate their eggs if they meet these criteria:

  • Healthy with no history of genetic disease. Donors will not be accepted if they suffer from an illness, disease or inherited condition that can be passed on to a child conceived from their donation
  • Donors who can provide their family medical history.  If married or in a de facto relationship, the partner must consent to the donation.
  • Donors must have a permanent address and be contactable for follow-up medical tests. They are required to provide three identifiers and proof of a permanent address, e.g. driver’s licence, photo ID and passport.
  • Clinic-recruited egg donors must be eligible for full Medicare benefits in Australia.

Overseas donors recruited through international donor banks can donate their eggs if they meet the following criteria:

  • Healthy Body Mass Index
  • Be willing to administer medications by injection (very small subcutaneous needles)
