Who should consider donor sperm?

There are many reasons why individuals and couples may choose to use donor sperm to help grow their families. At Rainbow Fertility, we recognise that everyone’s fertility journey is unique, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

Using donor sperm may be an option for:

  • Those who wish to conceive but do not have access to sperm
  • Single parents by choice
  • People facing fertility challenges

What are the treatment options using donor sperm?

Donor insemination

Donor insemination is a fertility treatment that involves placing treated donor sperm directly into the uterus. The method of artificial insemination most commonly used is Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI).

While donor insemination can be a suitable option for some, it’s not the best treatment option for everyone. Its success can depend on a range of factors such as the recipient’s age, the presence of endometriosis, and whether the fallopian tubes are healthy and unblocked. A fertility specialist will assess your individual situation to help determine if donor insemination is the best pathway for you.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a fertility treatment where an egg is fertilised with donor sperm in a laboratory incubator before the resulting embryo is transferred into the recipient’s uterus. Partner IVF is also an option using donor sperm. From the beginning of the cycle to embryo transfer, the process typically takes around three to four weeks.

Your fertility specialist will tailor your IVF treatment plan based on your unique medical history, age, diagnosis, and other fertility-related factors, ensuring a personalised and considered approach.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about using donor sperm

What is donor sperm?

Donor sperm is provided by individuals who altruistically donate to help individuals and couples achieve their dreams of parenthood. This is carried out under strict regulations to ensure the highest standards of safety, ethics, and transparency.

What are the types of donor sperm?

Known donor

A known donor is someone you have a personal connection with who has agreed to voluntarily donate their sperm. This could include a friend, relative, or trusted individual.

Clinic-recruited donor (also known as unknown donor)

A clinic-recruited donor is someone who voluntarily donates sperm to an unknown recipient. These donors undergo comprehensive medical screenings to ensure the highest standards of safety, including testing for transmittable and genetic conditions, as well as a mandatory three-month quarantine period for sperm donation.

Additionally, clinic-recruited donors receive professional counselling to ensure they fully understand the legal and emotional implications of donation. Strict regulations and limits are also in place to manage the number of families that can be created from each donor, ensuring ethical donor usage.

This thorough process provides peace of mind for those using clinic-recruited sperm, ensuring quality, safety, and compliance with all fertility regulations.

How much does donor sperm treatment cost?

The cost of donor sperm depends on the donor selected, and costs start at $1500. For more information, please contact our Fertility Advice Centre or refer to our Treatment Costs page.

What treatment options are available for people using donor sperm?

Donor insemination

Donor insemination is a fertility treatment that involves placing treated donor sperm directly into the uterus. The method of artificial insemination most commonly used is Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI).

The whole process, up to the embryo transfer stage, usually takes around three to four weeks.

Why does Rainbow Fertility recommend genetic carrier screening?

Rainbow Fertility Fertility strongly recommends that all patients accessing donor gametes through Addam Donor Bank complete expanded genetic carrier screening or genetic counselling. This important step helps recipients to understand any potential risks and implications of their selected donors’ carrier status.

Expanded carrier screening results must be returned before selecting a donor. If you would like more information, your fertility specialist can explain genetic carrier screening to you.

Who can become a sperm donor?

People of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds are welcome to become sperm donors if they meet these criteria:

  • Aged between 18 – 45 years
  • Have a healthy BMI
  • Are able to provide a detailed medical history for themselves and also for their extended family
  • Complete expanded genetic carrier screening

Clinic-recruited sperm donors with a student, working holiday or temporary working visas will not be accepted to the program. Donors with temporary resident visas may be accepted to the program if they meet the above requirements
